Louvre

We finally made it into the Louvre on Friday evening for the cut-price (6€) 'nocturne' session. We saw around a quarter of the collection, primarily the antiquities, but also some other things including the remaining crown jewels. It was excellent and thoroughly surpassed our disappointing trip to Versailles last weekend. The Louvre's collections are astonishing and vast - we saw 2000 Greek vases arranged by theme and chronologically - and also very well curated, with well organised information cards and explanatory notes by every object or picture. We will have to find time to visit at least 3 more times to see the rest of the collections. It was very pleasantly not busy last night so we will have to fit in our next 3 nocturnes (the Louvre is open late on Wednesday and Friday) before the tourist season starts properly in the spring. The building itself is also very interesting and again I'd have to say more interesting than the Château de Versailles. Most of the interiors are not very old, the Palais du Louvre having been remodelled by each successive king and Napoleon, but there are some beautiful rooms which are well worth seeing.
