Should have mentioned that I now have a cashcard for my Italian bank. Having a cashcard for the country you're in makes you feel much more like you're really living there and not just a tourist. Interestingly, Italian bank cards have 5 digit PINs. To get your PIN, you have to go into your bank and they hand it over to you. I haven't showed any ID in my bank since the first time I went in there - they rely on knowing most of their customers. The lady who deals with account enquiries always recognises me and remembers my name (ok - I'm probably the only English customer, but still).
